I was the top shot in every Army unit I was in for 30 years, and in my retirement I teach pistol lessons. I point out the best weapon for home defense is the 870 with 18" barrel since adrenaline rush destroys pistol accuracy. Just the unmistakable sound of pumping the gun should make the bad guy run out the door. But if you know the bad guy is liable to be hopped up on something, have a pre-placed absorbent target in the room and shoot a load into the target, then pump the gun again. That'll do it. A pistol bullet will go through walls into your neighbor's house - bad option. The FBI has this weapon in its arsenal. 'Nuff said.
